ICE SAFETY

Ice Safety at the WG & CC

Let’s face it, sliding on one foot with a gripper on the other foot is a very awkward thing to do! Many experienced curlers have slipped and fallen on the ice and have injured themselves.

At the WG & CC, we strive to take the proper measures to ensure the safety of all our members & guests. Every curler who steps foot on our ice should have a pair of grippers over their curling shoes to protect them from slipping on the ice. Always check the condition of your grippers and if needed, purchase a new gripper from our curling pro shop for approximately $20.00.

Unfortunately, we have witnessed several members fall and hit their head. We strongly encourage all members to consider wearing head protection while curling. Our Curling Pro Shop stocks protective headgear designed to reduce the possibility from the most common and dangerous falls in curling – where your feet slip out and the fall is onto the back of the head. We stock toques, headbands, baseball caps and curling helmets. Contact the curling office and we’ll guarantee a discount on all head protection.

The following are some of the safety measures that each participant should practice for good ice safety:

    • warm up before the game - stretching and warming muscles before going out on the ice can help prevent injury
    • step onto the ice gripper-foot first - never use your slider foot to step onto the ice
    • always be careful when stepping off the ice - always use your slider foot first
    • the rule of thumb for your slider foot is last on & first off!
    • step off the platform onto a clear piece of ice. Avoid stepping over a rock
    • never lift a rock, unless part of your delivery
    • never stop a rock with your hand
    • never use your foot to stop a fast moving rock - you could lose your balance and fall. Use your broom to stop a rock
    • stay alert and watch for stray rocks
    • when sweeping, check the far house and familiarize yourself with where the rocks are located.
    • keep your feet on the ice - avoid running or hopping. Walk or slide
    • if you can't keep up with a fast moving rock while sweeping, just let it go.
    • never go on the ice surface if you’re under the influence of alcohol and unsteady.

New curlers should consider taking a curling lesson. The WG & CC offers training / lessons for all skill level throughout the curling season.

Protecting ourselves from injury is very important. Be aware! Go out and enjoy the great sport of curling with confidence.
